Hi, I’m Jasmin Attia.I turned forty this year, but I remind myself everyday that forty is the new twenty, which means I still have another twenty years before I actually turn forty. The man beside me here is my best friend, soul mate, my husband, and the father of my two beautiful children.
I’ve spent the last fifteen years in corporate America and now I’m out on my own, but this blog isn’t about business. It’s about the lost spice. No, I’m not talking about turmeric, although I will be featuring recipes with it.
I’m talking about the spice of life. We often forget to stop and smell and taste, to close our eyes and to savor. Life gets too busy. The children are screaming. The homework isn’t done. Work emails are flooding in and the clock is ticking louder and louder.
I’m just like you. My to-do list will never be fully ticked off and I am guilty of letting the stress gobble me up more than I should. This blog is about how I’m finding the lost spice. I’m a wife, a mother, a business owner, a writer, and a amateur chef, but I’ve let myself make the mistakes so you don’t have to. Journey with me and find your lost spice too.
Legacies From Afar
Okay, so here’s my short long story. I’m a first generation American. My parents were born and raised in Cairo Egypt, and I spent my teen years resenting the fact that we ate fava beans for breakfast and that peanut butter had never entered our pantry. Not to mention that my parents thought a High School homecoming meant that I was brining a friend home for dinner.
But then I started watching my mother in the kithen, spice and all. It wasn’t just what she cooked, but how she did it. No measurements, no recipes, no papers or pens, just taste and a magical ability that teetered on the edge of improvisation and fine art.
Years later I married the love of my life in front of the Great Pyramid on the Giza Plateau (yep that’s me in the picture). Suddenly I had my own kitchen and my own life to spice. I too improvise a lot and my recipes are very much a tasting of east meets west. Now, I live in South Florida and I cook with my own children who love the kitchen too.
Kitchens & Philosophies
My kitchen looks like a war zone when I’m done cooking, but I believe in the beauty of the plate. Your food doesn’t just have to taste good. It must look good so I’m going to spend a lot of time on presentation. I will be trying things that work and things that don’t work.
You don’t need a big kitchen or a lot of money. All you need is the desire to try something new. I promise you’ll love that feeling of serving up a plate that looks like it came out of a restaurant kitchen.
